Why Automated Guided Vehicles Are the Future

agvsIf all the big names are out there do it, there must be something very practical about it. BMW, Volkswagen, Mercedes Benz, Ford, Nissan and Tesla are investing big amounts of money and research to improve self driving cars. Countless of hours of tweaking and reprogramming are spent in order to make them not only safer but also more reliable in hazardous situations. Not much to wonder there, I thought at the beginning, feeling that it’s just another step on the ladder of progress.

But what about automated guided vehicles in general? They do not reach media’s attention and are barely talked about, even though they’ve been around since the 1950ies and are the precursors of the automotive automobile industry.

The multiple faces of an AGV

The technology for today’s self-driving cars basically stems from there. The robots, mostly used in the industry right now, function by following a track on the floor. This track can either be delimited by wiring or has been programmed into the robot’s memory. AGVs can use cams, lasers or magnets in order to orientated themselves through space. Since they can be used to carry or lift heavy weights and do not need human assistance anymore, it makes warehouse work safer, faster and more reliable.

When I watched “The Martian”, Andy Weir’s brilliant book adaptation, with Matt Damon it dawned on me once again, that those automated vehicles are constantly being used on Mars or for Space exploration purposes, providing valuable data but also a helping hand where no human could carry through with maintenance work.

There are down to earth aspects of these practical automatic helpers as well. You can find them in almost every niche and branch out there:

  • pharmaceutical
  • medical
  • chemical
  • food and beverage sector
  • in hospitals and so on and so forth

I have to confess, that I am a little late on realizing the many benefits this sort of technology offers to us. Think of people with motor disabilities or elderly people in need of some home-assistance. They can experience a comfortable life – all made possible through AVG.

Tips for long driving in the summer

Posted by on Sep 13, 2016 in Automotive Industry, Driving Tips | Comments Off on Tips for long driving in the summer

W all often hear or read various tips for driving during winter months. However, it is equally important to pay attention to safety during summer. High temperatures affect the drivers as well as the roads, so you should pay attention to staying safe during these hot summer months.

On what you should pay attention

Most people use hot summer months to skip town and go on vacation. Because of this, there are many more drivers on the roads who go long distances. In such cases, it is crucial to pay attention to the general condition of your car first. Many people make a mistake and not check their thoroughly before a long ride.
Then, it is important to use the right type of tires. Most of us are aware of it during winter, and we often have reminders about it when it is cold and the roads are frozen. However, it is as important to use appropriate tires for summer as it is for winter.
Last, but not least, as you need to take care of the car, you need to take care of yourself as well. Summer heat can be exhausting and unpleasant, which can hinder your driving. Therefore, make sure to take appropriate care of your condition.

Checking the car

Before you start the journey, it is essential to check your car. This includes the standard vehicle inspection: checking the tires, engine oil and water, windscreen and windows, lights, breaks, steering wheel, shift gear and the other vital parts of the car. During summer months, it is also important to check the air conditioning system, because it is important to stay cool while driving.

Choosing the tires

As we mentioned before, just like you need to have the appropriate tires during winter, summer requires this from you as well. Winter tires are made from different compounds and with deeper treads. This way they can adhere to the road better in slippery, slushy and snowy conditions. Summer tires are made with shallow treads, they are designed to increase cornering and braking capabilities, and they are suitable for wet roads as well. There are also all season tires, which blend the features of both winter and summer types. However, since they are not suitable for extreme winter conditions, they are better for use in summer, so you can opt for them.

Taking care of yourself

After taking care of your car and making sure that everything is in place, you can start the journey and make sure that you stay safe and healthy. The heat can cause dehydration, fatigue and lack of concentration, which can be fatal for you as a driver. Therefore, use the air conditioning in the car to keep you cool. Make sure to take a lot of liquid with you and stay hydrated all the time. If you drive long distances, take a 20 minute break every 2 to 3 hours, grab a bite and stretch your legs. If you feel tired, pull over and get some sleep.
Summer vacation is a fun and thrilling activity, and even the ride to the destination can be joyful and fun if you prepare right and take care of yourself and the others. Therefore, get ready, stay safe and enjoy the ride.
